The SAAF Wings Parade was held at Langebaanweg Air Force Base up the Cape West Coast. Langebaanweg has a special place in my heart as this is where I served out my national service while I was in the SAAF in the early nineties. Langebaanweg is not only home to CFS (Central Flying School) but also home to the Silver Falcons, the aerobatic display team of the South African Air Force.
The 24th of March saw the presentation of rank, wings, flying crew insignia and trophies of student pilots course 114/10, as well as the navigators and flight engineers courses. The parade was reviewed by the Chief of the SAAF, Lt Gen C. Gagiano.
This occasion also marked the official transition of The Silver Falcons Team 70 to Team 71, with the addition of two new members, Capt. Heybrech van Niekerk (Falcon 2), the first female member of the team and the new soloist, Maj. Beau Skarda (Falcon 5).
Major Scott Ternent handed over their helmets and also handed the reigns of Falcon Lead over to Capt. Roy Sproul. I personally wish them all the best and look forward to seeing them carry our nations pride to airshows around the country.
